The perimeter security industry organises its thinking around a well-established framework: Deter, Detect, Delay, Respond. A serious perimeter should discourage attackers from trying, spot them when they do, slow them down enough for response teams to arrive, and enable an effective intervention. Most perimeter products in the market handle one of these functions. A physical fence delays. A PIDS system detects. Warning signage deters. Three Jobs in One Coil
Every perimeter security specifier knows the Deter-Detect-Delay-Respond framework, and most products in the market address only one of its functions. A palisade fence delays. A PIDS system detects. Warning signage deters. Response is a human matter – the fence and the sensors buy the time for the response team to arrive. Layering these functions into a comprehensive perimeter typically requires multiple products from multiple vendors, each installed and integrated separately.
Smart Coil compresses three of the four functions into a single product. It deters through its aggressive physical appearance and the visible threat of high voltage. It detects through an electrified inner conductor connected to a sensitivity-adjustable energizer. And it delays through the physical barrier of the razor coil itself. The fourth function – respond – remains the site operator’s responsibility, but Smart Coil is the product that sends the alarm that triggers the response.
The Razor Coil – Deter and Delay
The outer element of Smart Coil is a heavy-duty concertina razor coil – the visually aggressive, spiral-configured cutting mesh that has been the perimeter industry’s default deterrence for decades. The razor coil does two things at once. Visually, it announces the presence of a serious barrier before the intruder even approaches. There is no ambiguity about what razor wire is or what it will do to anyone attempting to cross it. This is the deterrence layer, and it works before contact is made.
Physically, the razor coil is a genuine barrier. The concertina configuration means any attempt to compress or bypass one loop of the coil engages several adjacent loops, and the razor edges make handling the coil without protective equipment effectively impossible. The delay function is not theoretical: an attacker who chooses to persist against a razor coil is committing to a slow, injury-prone, and highly visible attempt. The delay is significant enough to give a monitored response team meaningful time to arrive on scene.
The Electrified Inner Coil – Detect and Repulse
The inner element of Smart Coil is where the product becomes genuinely distinctive. Concealed inside the razor coil, and electrically isolated from it, runs a live conductor connected to a dedicated energizer. The conductor performs two functions simultaneously. First, it is a covert detection system: any interference with the coil, whether cutting, contact, or attempted bypass, disturbs the conductor and triggers an alert to the connected security system. The detection is covert because the conductor sits inside the razor coil, visible only as another wire in the coil structure. An attacker approaching Smart Coil is aware of the razor threat but has no visual signal of the electrified detection layer.
Second, the conductor delivers a 7,000-volt repulse shock on contact. The shock is high-voltage, low-current, and non-lethal – engineered to the same safety principles as any properly-designed electric perimeter fence. Its purpose is not to injure but to interrupt: the shock is sharp enough that a would-be intruder in mid-attempt disengages and retreats. The moment the shock is delivered, the energizer also registers the contact and triggers the alarm.
Combined, these two functions turn Smart Coil into a covert electric fence that also happens to be armoured with razor wire. It detects the attacker, shocks the attacker, and alerts the operator – in the same instant.
How Electric and Razor Coexist
The genuinely clever piece of engineering inside Smart Coil is the coexistence of the electrified inner conductor and the metallic razor coil that surrounds it. These two elements would, without careful isolation, short each other out. The electrical current would earth into the razor coil and be lost, the detection would fail, and the shock would never reach the intruder. Cochrane’s Smart Coil solves this problem with a specific system of isolators that hold the electrified conductor at a minimum of 100 millimetres from the razor coil at every point. This 100mm separation is not arbitrary – it is the distance required to guarantee reliable electrical isolation under working conditions, and it also happens to be the separation required for compliance with South African electric fencing regulations.
The second engineering challenge is wind. An electrified detection system that alarms every time the wind blows is a nuisance product that quickly gets disabled by its own operators. Cochrane’s Smart Coil design ensures that the razor coil and the inner electrified conductor move together in windy conditions – coupled through the isolators such that atmospheric movement affects both elements identically, and the detection system registers no relative movement between them. The energizer also carries sensitivity adjustment that can be tuned to site conditions, filtering out routine environmental movement while remaining fully responsive to genuine contact.
The isolators themselves have recently been upgraded to provide improved insulation performance and greater durability across the full Smart Coil range, extending both the working life of the system and the reliability of the detection in harsh weather.
Retrofit to Any Fence, Wall, or Roof
One of Smart Coil’s most commercially valuable properties is that it is retrofittable to virtually any perimeter structure. It can be installed as a topping on any existing fence – ClearVu, palisade, weldmesh, chain-link, or masonry. It can be installed as a standalone barrier where a full fence is impractical. It can be installed on top of a wall. It can be installed along the eave of a roof. Wherever a site needs to close a horizontal or vertical line against intrusion, Smart Coil can be specified and installed without demolishing what is already there.
This is the article’s most direct commercial point. Sites with existing perimeter infrastructure – sometimes decades old, sometimes bespoke, often difficult or expensive to replace without significant downtime – can achieve a comprehensive security upgrade by adding Smart Coil to what they already own. The existing fence delays. Smart Coil adds deterrence and detection. The perimeter goes from passive to active without a full rebuild.
Integration and Regulatory Compliance
Smart Coil is designed to plug into the wider security architecture of any site. A single energizer handles up to one kilometre of Smart Coil, which makes the product economically viable across long perimeters. The alarm signal from the energizer can be connected to almost any monitoring system on the market – the site’s existing alarm control panel, its PIDS controller, its CCTV DVR, its guard-station display, or a remote monitoring service. As with the wider Cochrane approach to perimeter integration, the customer chooses the monitoring vendor on its own merits. The integration is engineered; the monitoring platform is not locked in.
The system is compliant with South African electric fencing regulations, including the 100mm isolation requirement and the non-lethal voltage limit. Sites in other jurisdictions may have different regulatory requirements; Cochrane Global’s specification team can advise on the appropriate configuration for the country and site type.
A Note on Installation
Smart Coil is delivered as a factory-stretched, factory-terminated product, and this matters. Stretching the coil on site produces an uneven finish that compromises both the appearance of the installation and, in some cases, the electrical isolation of the system. Installation is straightforward when the fence, wall, or roof it is being fitted to has posts extended to accommodate the tensioning of the straining wire that supports the coil. Specifiers should include post extension in the site preparation brief where Smart Coil is being retrofitted to existing fencing. On new installations, the extension is accounted for in the standard specification.
Three Jobs, One Product, Any Perimeter
Very few products in the perimeter security market do more than one thing well.
